About Paper Lantern

Paper Lantern are a theatre company that like to challenge themselves, creating magic on stage by tackling bold classical and contemporary texts. With a passion for narrative and verisimilitude, we strongly reference and use film as an inspiration and as such, invest in creative staging, innovative sets and evocative music

Creative Directors : Sally Broatch / Rosie Beattie
Artistic Director : Darren Beattie
Technical Director : Duncan Broatch

Direction

Our mission is to create a modern and original interpretation of each text whilst retaining its connection to the era and setting. We are passionate about creating new ways of presenting classic texts. Strongly influenced by film, the production team give enormous attention to detail, fully developing the subtext and allowing the actors scope to completely explore the characters. Transitions, underscore and lighting are used to seamlessly connect scenes and deliver uninterrupted narrative and to immerse the audience in the performance from start to finish. Plays are picked very deliberately to enable us to create exciting variations on traditional theatre making, breathing new life into the texts which we love.

Stylish Set Design

Paper Lantern aim to create an immersive theatrical experience and to that end, set designs are carefully created to mirror the themes of each play. There is a faithful sense of time and place whilst playfully subverting the verisimilitude to convey a sense of seduction and unease, glamour and decay. Colour, composition and materials are carefully interweaved to create an authentic space that can be slickly transformed to enhance the narrative. Props are used as visual metaphors, still-life installations reflecting the motivation of each character and the underlying concepts of the play.

Immersive Sound Stage

Quincy Jones is quoted as saying "Film music is emotion lotion .. we can make you feel anything we want you to feel". Undoubtedly music has the power to move, emote and sow powerful semiotic seeds. So why keep it for the movies? Paper Lantern use a mixture of contemporary, often undiscovered, sometimes original, classic music, plus foley type sound effects, always chosen to augment the direction and a general artistic design, creating a rich and electric soundstage.

A Streetcar Named Desire

“A complex, powerful, multilayered giant of a play – Streetcar would be a challenge for any professional company. They have tackled this challenge head on – and the result is a mesmerising production that leaves you almost as exhausted by the emotion as the characters on stage.”

The Vortex

'The Vortex' shot Noel Coward to fame as both a playwright and a performer, its depiction of sex and drugs in the Jazz Age stunning the critics and causing a sensation. As both mother and son begin to reveal their vulnerability what starts as a frothy comedy moves towards darker territory. In The Vortex, Coward explores the darker side of the Cocktail Party set. Emotional blackmail, drug abuse and shattered relationships are minutely observed in this disturbing, early piece from a playwright whose sharp eye was more turned towards a lighter persona. Now in a world where there is constant pressure to be perfect, The Vortex is as relevant today as it was 80 years ago. “How can we help ourselves. We swirl about in a vortex of beastliness”
