Noel Coward

This revolutionary play, the first to be written by Coward in 1924, made his name and firmly established him as both a playwright and an actor. The Vortex, with its depiction of sex and drugs in the Jazz Age, stunned the critics and caused a sensation within the theatre-going public. Coward explores emotional blackmail, drug abuse and shattered relationships Now in a world where there is constant pressure to be perfect, The Vortex is as relevant today as it was 80 years ago.

“An evening spent in the centre of the Vortex is an emotionally charged experience, beautiful and at the time brutal. As one would expect of the play that Noel Coward created and performed in 1924, as a showcase of his playwriting and acting skills, this production is elegant and superbly stylish. ”

Tom Beattie is outstanding as Nicky, this young actor has acting skills way beyond his age, he is convincing as a posh English man on the verge of the vortex of drug addiction. He is mesmerising, and when matched with Rosie Beattie's Florence, (yes they are a real life mother/ son combo!), the quality rockets, the final scene is among the best I have seen on stage this year.

The Vortex

We're in the terribly refined, upper class world of Noel Coward. But it's not Coward as we have come to expect. The Vortex shocked audiences when it was first presented with its depiction of drug use, and the way it smahes the brittle façade of refined, sophisticated, idle lives. And the company triumph in this elegant, beautifully acted production directed by Sally Broatch.

"plaudits must go to superb art deco design by Darren Beattie and team, with costumes and props that capture the era perfectly. The lighting by Dan Scarlett moves and flows perfectly and dances with the excellent movement and music sequences that create a drug type trip to move us from each scene".

Tom wrings every drop of emotion from his character. This is the part that Noel Coward had created for himself, and the challenging mood changes and neurosis written into the part were expressively displayed and masterfully handled, with a maturity way beyond the actors age. Molly Scurrell is magnetic and engaging as Bunty and the couples interplay is sharp, edgy and uncompromising.

"Sally Broatch has invested enormous creative capital into this production, and it has really paid dividends. We were left moved and bruised, and the standing ovation was testimony to the high quality of the performances. If you miss the opportunity to see this masterpiece of theatre, you will undoubtedly regret it."
